Columbus #2

Sing Food Store

1040 Floyd Road

Columbus, GA 31907

Built in 1965, Columbus #2 was Sing's second convenience store and first in the state of Georgia.  Sing purchased the property in January, 1965 for $33,000.  According to property records, this station may have been built before Tallahassee #3, but Tom Perry, former Executive Vice President of Sing Oil, claims Tallahassee #3 was Sing's first convenience store. Additional sources confirm this.  It is known that Columbus #2 predates LaGrange #1, Sing's third convenience store. This station is one of three documented to use the Stop 'N Shop backlit canopy as shown below.  Perry claims this canopy was made of a printed canvas material that was backlit at night to produce the effect shown.  However, this station was converted to the more generic styling shown above at some point in the late 1970s.

At the same time, the station received a redesigned pump island and canopy while also adding a third fuel grade.  According to historical photos from the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer, Buena Vista Road was under construction to add additional travel lanes from 1979 -1980.  This forced the island to be shifted to its current, more centered location with respect to the store.

This station initially used backlit sign hardware that would have mostly been found on dealer-run, gasoline only stations.  The Thomasville #2 service station, also built in 1965, used this same sign hardware.

The station would operate under the Sing name until the early 1990s after the Amoco-Sing merger.  The station would be sold to Spectrum convenience stores in June 1993 and then sold to Circle K in June 2006.
